1999 was the first single to be released from Prince’s fifth album 1999. It was released a month before the album, and received a release around the world. The b-side, How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, was previously-unreleased.
The single was a huge success, helping to bring Prince to the attention of a much wider audience. It reached number 4 on the Billboard Black Singles Chart and reached number 44 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
6 months later, after the Top 10 chart success of both Little Red Corvette and 1999 album, Warner Bros. decided to re-issue it to US Pop radio stations, enabling it to re-entry the Hot 100 and this time reach position 12.
It also reached number 2 on the UK Gallup Singles Chart, and has been re-released numerous times (see below for details).
