Got To Be Something Here is the fourth track on Minneapolis-area band The Lewis Connection’s first and only album The Lewis Conection, featuring Prince on guitar. The Lewis Connection is an alternate name for the band The Family led by Sonny Thompson in the 1970’s (and which is unrelated to the band produced by Prince in the 1980’s The Family). The track was written by Sonny Thompson (who would become a member of the New Power Generation many years later), and produced by brothers Pierre and André Lewis.

Basic tracking took place in late 1976 at Sound 80, Minneapolis, Minnesota (during the same session that produced Stone Lover with the same musicians). Prince played on these tracks to raise money for his first New York trip in the autumn of 1976.

Got To Be Something Here was planned to be the B-side of the Stone Lover single, released under the moniker MLF (but is actually an alternate name for The Lewis Connection / The Family), but the band chose to cut Stone Lover into two parts for both sides.

Either this track or Stone Lover released around the same time (it’s not clear which was released first), marks the first time Prince appeared on a release by another artist, on a track he did not write (although earlier recordings by 94 East were released later). It also marks the first release of a collaboration between Prince and Sonny Thompson (recorded almost 13 years before Diamonds And Pearls, the next released collaboration).

In 2013, both Stone Lover and Got To Be Something Here were included on the Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound compilation.

Got To Be Something Here was released as a single by the Japanese label P-Vine Records in 2022.
