The Song Of The Heart is the first track on the Happy Feet movie soundtrack, released to coincide with the Happy Feet movie, and, around the same time as the album’s release, The Song Of The Heart was released to radio as a promo single. While the studio version did not appear on a Prince studio album, a 2007 live recording (known only as Song Of The Heart, without the definitive article) of the track was included as the third track on Prince’s fourth live album Indigo Nights (released in 2008) as the second track in a medley containing Girls & Boys, Song Of The Heart, Delirious and Just Like U (Monologue).

Basic tracking took place on 23 June 2006 shortly after Prince was shown a rough-cut of the Happy Feet movie to obtain permission to use the song Kiss in the movie, performed by actors. It was likely recorded at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, although this is unconfirmed. Of note is that the song features the first appearance on a Prince recording of Bria Valente, performing background vocals (uncredited) which were recorded on 13 August 2006. The title (Song Of The Heart) appears on an early configuration of the Lotusflow3r album that also contains six tracks that ended up on Planet Earth in 2007.

The song was awarded a Golden Globe Award in the category of "Best Original Song - Motion Picture" at the HFPA 64th Golden Globes Awards on 15 January 2007. Its competitors in the category were: Never Gonna Break My Faith by Bryan Adams, Eliot Kennedy and Andrea Remanda (from Bobby, 2006); Listen by Scott Cutler, Beyoncé Knowles, Henry Krieger and Anne Preven (from Dreamgirls, 2006); Try Not To Remember by Sheryl Crow (from Home Of The Brave, 2006); and A Father’s Way by Seal and Christopher Bruce (from The Pursuit Of Happyness, 2006). The award marks Prince’s only Golden Globe Award to date, though he also appeared as a presenter for the same award in 2015.

  • Robin Williams, whose voice from the movie is sampled in the studio version of The Song Of The Heart, was previously considered for the role of The Joker in the 1989 movie Batman, for which Prince wrote the soundtrack. Prince’s role was due in part to actor Jack Nicholson, who received the role instead of Williams, however.
