4 The Tears In Your Eyes was released as the sixth track on the compilation album We Are The World, intended to raise money for famine relief efforts in Africa.
In 1993, an alternate recording (taken from the recording of the song's video) was included as the 19th track (the first of two previously-unreleased tracks) on The B-Sides compilation (included as the third and final disc on The Hits / The B-Sides).
Recording process
Initial tracking for 4 The Tears In Your Eyes took place on 2 February 1985 using a mobile recording studio outside the Superdome, New Orleans, LA, USA, the day after performing there (1 February 1985) on the Purple Rain Tour.
The video version was recorded in April 1985 (exact date unknown) at SIR Los Angeles, Hollywood, CA, USA, and premiered on 13 July 1985 during the world-wide Live Aid event.
The song Hello alludes to the recording of this song in lieu of participating in the all-star recording of the song We Are The World, stating:"I told them that I didn't want to sing / but I'd gladly write a song instead" .
