After Hi School is the third track on The Time's first album The Time, and, a month before the album's release, an edited version was included as the b-side of Get It Up, the album's first single. The song was written by Dez Dickerson, although the album does not contain any writing credits, and produced and performed by Prince and Morris Day.

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in April 1981 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with the rest of the album). As with much of the rest of the album, the recording features only Prince and Morris Day.
