Plectrumelectrum is the 36th full-length studio album by Prince. It was composed, recorded and produced by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl and was released on 30 September 2014 (29 September 2014 in Europe).
It was made available for pre-order on iTunes USA, Amazon and on a dedicated Warner Bros Records website on 25 August 2014. Available formats are CD + Digital MP3 bundle, MP3 and WAV. On 29 September 2014 the album was made available on Spotify streaming platform.
Late November 2014 the album was released on vinyl format.
First Steps
The 3rdEyeGirl band featured on the album began working together in December 2012, indicating a large portion of the album was recorded in 2013 and first part of 2014.
The title track, Plectrumelectrum, was first streamed in March 2013, as a rehearsal video. In April 2013, blogger Dr. Funkenberry relayed a news update "from Paisley Park" that a Live Out Loud Tour launch party would feature music from an album tentatively-titled Plectrum Electrum. Over time the title has been written with and without the space between words.
Pretzelbodylogic and Funknroll were both played at a listening party for the album in February 2014.
Initial information suggested that Prince did not appear on lead vocals for most of the album, and that the album would be released by 3rdEyeGirl alone, but over time it appears that many tracks have been added to as well as removed from the album, with the album finally being announced as a "Prince and 3rdEyeGirl" project.
Sessions and compiling
The album was recorded and mixed at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA and at Studio One, London, England between late 2012 and early 2014.
Tracks known to have been recorded by the band between 2012 and early 2014, but not on the album include Pulla Wagon, Shade Of Umber, Stoned Flower, Live Out Loud, What If and a re-recording of The Breakdown.
Promotion
Two singles have been released with the credit "Prince and 3rdEyeGirl" - Fixurlifeup (initially released with the artist credit "3rdEyeGirl feat. Prince" before the credit was reversed), and Pretzelbodylogic.
On 4 September 2014, Whitecaps was made available as pre-order digital single. On 20 September 2014 Anotherlove and Marz were made available to download on iTunes Germany.
The album reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, and 8 on The Billboard 200. It also entered the main charts in Europe, Australia and Japan, reaching top 10 positions in Austria, Denmark, France, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
