In keeping with previous Madhouse releases tracks were given tentative numerical titles of 17 to 26. When Prince suggested the album should be released as a solo album by Eric Leeds, Leeds came up with titles for each track (and recorded a new track, Lines, in Spring 1990, which became the new opening track). Times Squared is the first solo studio album by Eric Leeds, and was released in February 1991 (on the same day as Contribution by Mica Paris, also featuring musical input by Prince). Nine of the eleven tracks were written or co-written by Prince and contain him playing most instruments, with Eric Leeds playing saxophone and minimal contributions from other musicians. In addition, Prince appears on Kenya, one of the two remaining tracks, as a musician.

Sessions and compiling

Times Squared evolved from the planned third Madhouse album, 26, compiled in September 1989 from instrumental tracks recorded between 1985-1988. Little Rock was recorded in late May 1985 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. Easy Does It was recorded on 22 July 1986 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio, Chanhassen, Minnesota. Andorra, Night Owl, Overnight, Every Night and Kenya were recorded in July 1987 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (while recording tracks for Madhouse’s 16 album).

Once Upon A Time was recorded in December 1987 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Times Squared and Cape Horn were recorded in June 1988 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The Dopamine Rush was part of the unreleased 21-24 (The Dopamine Rush Suite), recorded from July-December 1988, at Townhouse Studios, London, England, Medley Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark and Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. In July 1989, Prince gave numerous tracks from the vault that he felt might be worth examining for use on the album and suggested to Leeds to work with Atlanta Bliss and Candy Dulfer on the tracks: XYZ, Evolsidog, My Summertime Thang, Pickle, You’re All I Want, U Should Be Mine, Wet Dream Cousin, Vibrator, The Max, A Couple Miles and Feline. Except for U’re All I Want, it is not believed that Leeds worked on the tracks, however.

Lines did not contain any input by Prince, and so is not linked below, but interpolations from the track have been played live during shows (see Lines for details). Overnight, Every Night was included on the CD version of the album only.

Promotion

The album produced two promotional singles, The Dopamine Rush and Little Rock, but the album failed to enter the charts.
