Balloon is the first track on Heroine December's first and only EP Target Practice. The song was released as the first single on 14 February 2014, two months before the EP release with no songwriting credits.
Prince’s involvement on Balloon was confirmed at the time of release as 'rearrangement,' but the specific details were confirmed in 2021 when Maya McClean revealed in an interview that he help them rewrite the song she wrote (most likely with her sister Nandy:
- "He re-wrote one of the songs that me and my sister released called Balloon. We’ll play it somewhere and then he goes "Maybe you can do a little bit of a change here and a little bit there." So then when we recorded it, we have used his chords in some of the transitional parts."
Balloon features Sheila E. on congas. This is thought to be her latest contribution to a track written by Prince, but the timing has not been confirmed.
