The song was based on the coda that Prince (as ) had been playing at the end of live performances of Peach throughout 1993. Although Prince (as ) played the coda in 1994 versions of Peach also, he has not done so since Chaos And Disorder was released; while both songs have been played at the same shows between 2007-9, he has not segued them together or played them consecutively, so he seems to view them now as separate songs.

Chaos And Disorder is the first track on Prince’s 18th album Chaos And Disorder, the second album credited to SymbolSmallerBlue.png. In 2007, 3121.com streamed a live version recorded on 29 August 2007 (a.m.) at the The IndigO2 in London, England, titled only C&D 8/28 (the discrepancy in date is likely due to the show being an aftershow following the 28 August 2007 show at The O2 Arena).

While exact recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in late October 1993, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day that Right The Wrong was recorded, during the same set of sessions that produced Gold, 319 and Billy Jack Bitch).

It is likely that Rosie Gaines’ vocal part was recorded in late 1995 or early 1996 at Paisley Park Studios (at the same time she recorded her parts of I Rock, Therefore I Am, I Will, and Jam Of The Year). The track contains sampled effects of Julius Fučík’s 1897 composition Entrance Of The Gladiators (also played in Merci For The Speed Of A Mad Clown In Summer) and Reveille.

In late March or early April 1996, Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) re-recorded the song with Michael B. and Sonny T. at South Beach Studios, Miami Beach, Florida (during the same set of sessions as the re-recordings of Dinner With Delores and Right The Wrong, and where Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) also mixed and completed the Chaos And Disorder album), but the original recording was used on the final album instead.

The song was based on the coda that Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) had been playing at the end of live performances of Peach throughout 1993. Although Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) played the coda in 1994 versions of Peach also, he did not do so after Chaos And Disorder was released; while both songs were played at the same shows between 2007-9, he did not segue them together or play them consecutively, so he seemed to view them as separate songs.

For the sake of clarity with live versions of Peach, Chaos And Disorder is only listed as a coda on live versions played after the late October 1993 studio recording of Chaos And Disorder.
