Dionne is the fifth track on Prince’s 21st album The Truth (his fifth using the name SymbolSmallerBlue.png).

Specific recording dates are not known, but was recorded in the winter of 1996 / 1997 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, when sessions for the album took place.

During a Love4oneanother.com "? of the week" in 1999, a fan (using the name Dionne) asked about the inspiration for the song, to which Prince replied:

"Dionne lives in London and knows quite well the heart she broke. All Dionnes r heartbreakers!"

Since singer Dionne Farris from New Jersey was sent a tape with the song it is safe to assume the song is indeed about her. She has said that the line "Did u get the tape eye sent u, Eye thought it be better in a song" from One Of Your Tears refers to this happening.
