Don’t Say U Love Me is the tenth track on Martika’s second album Martika’s Kitchen. In 1997, it was included as the eleventh track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 2005, it was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Toy Soldiers: The Best Of Martika.
Although specific recording dates are unknown, basic tracking took place between 13 and 17 February 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Spirit and Open Book and Go On (Witcha Bad Self)). The working title for the track was Martika Jam (or Martika Jam Groove as listed on a tape photographed in Prince’s vault). In the liner notes for the expanded 2018 re-release of Martika’s Kitchen [Reheated Edition], Martika discussed the song’s recording: "This was one of the songs which morphed from one version to another. Prince liked my lyrics on this, and decided to funktify it on his unique way. Our basic contact throughout my L.A. & N.Y. sessions was over the phone."
In Spring 1991, Martika overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians and vocalists added overdubs to the track, in New York and Los Angeles.
