Electric Intercourse was most likely recorded in the spring of 1983. A live version of it was recorded on 3 August 1983 at First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USA (during the same concert where live versions of Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain were also recorded).
Prince used this live version when adding overdubs to the track in mid-September 1983 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA. It is likely the track was originally planned to be included on the album Purple Rain (and in the movie Purple Rain) as either the 'studio version' or in the same overdubbed-live format as I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain. A few days after recording overdubs however, Prince recorded The Beautiful Ones, which replaced Electric Intercourse.
During Prince: A Celebration in June 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II, and while Electric Intercourse was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned.
In 2017 Electric Intercourse was released as the fourth track on the From The Vault & Previously Unreleased disc of a Deluxe release of Purple Rain.
