While credited as a solo composition by , the track was first recorded as an instrumental during a jam session between Prince, his band, Meshell Ndegeocello, Eric Leeds and Brian Lynch on 3 July 1996 at Battery Studios, New York, NY, USA (during the same session as another untitled instrumental). At some point between July and October 1996, Prince re-recorded the track at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA.
