Eternity is the first track on Sheena Easton's eighth album No Sound But A Heart, and, around the same time as the album's release, Eternity was released as the album's first and only single. In 1993, it was included as the 19th and final track on The World Of Sheena Easton: The Singles Collection compilation. The song was written, produced and largely recorded by Prince (although production is credited to David Leonard, and Prince uses the pseudonyms Rocker Happyfeller and Freddie "The Phantom" for musician credits).

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in December 1985, at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. Prince first offered the track to George Clinton for a project he was producing for Vanessa Williams, but the song was not used. Sheena Easton's vocals were recorded later, although details of her recording are not known.

Chaka Khan included a version of Eternity on her eighth album CK. Although Prince contributed to the album (on the track Sticky Wicked), he did not contribute to this track; it is considered a cover version, therefore, and is not discussed in detail here.
