Hey U was recorded on 23 June 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on the same day as Standing At The Altar. Both songs were earmarked for a solo project by Margie Cox, after the Flash album, for which she sung lead vocals, was abandoned.
The composition contains musical elements from Archie Bell & The Drells’ 1968 song Tighten Up and a chorus reminiscent of The Esquires’ 1967 song Get On Up, both covered by Prince and the New Power Generation on the Act I Tour in 1993. It also contains a sample of LaWanda Page’s voice saying Hold it, Fred! (from the TV series Sanford And Son) also heard on Gangster Glam recorded around the same time.
Margie Cox added her lead vocals to it in two sessions on 25 & 26 June 1991.
A second version with both Margie Cox and Billy Franze singing was recorded in November 1991, but the song remained unreleased at the time. The song was already filed for copyright registration before that, on 4 October 1991.
Hey U was released in October 2023 as the seventh track of Vault Tracks part 3, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition.
