I Don't Wanna Leave You is the sixth and final track on The Time's second album What Time Is It?, and, a few months after the album's release, it was included as the b-side of the album's second single Gigolos Get Lonely Too. In 1983, it was included as the second track on the 12" single of The Walk, the album's third and final single. The song was written by Prince, although the song is officially credited to The Time. It was produced by Prince (as The Starr Company), but was credited to Morris Day and The Starr Company.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in May-June 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced 777-9311, Onedayi'mgonnabesomebody, and several other tracks that were released over the next several years).
Although it wasn't released as a single in the USA, I Don't Wanna Leave You (with 777-9311 and The Walk) reached position 42 in the Billboard Dance/Disco Top 80 Chart, indicating the track was selected by DJs as a favorite in US clubs when the album was released.
