Insatiable is the twelfth track on Prince’s 13th album Diamonds And Pearls, the first album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation, and, four weeks after the album’s release, Insatiable was released as the album’s third single in the USA (on the same day as the Cream maxi-single).

Basic tracking was done at Larrabee Sound Studios in North Hollywood, California on 8 October 1990. The track was included as the seventh track on the December 1990, configuration of Diamonds And Pearls, but was moved to become the twelfth track on the 1 March 1991 and 8 May 1991 configurations, where it remained for release. The album booklet contains lyrics from a longer version included on an earlier configuration of the album that were not kept for release.

In 2000, Insatiable was planned for inclusion on When 2 R In Love: The Ballads Of Prince (likely in re-recorded form, although it is possible this was planned but not executed). The album did not receive many votes by visitors at Prince: A Celebration, however, and was ultimately abandoned.

An early version of the song (as Insatiable (Early Mix - Full Version)) was released in October 2023 as the seventh track of Vault Tracks part 1, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition. This version was also streamed on Prince’s Youtube channel and other streaming platforms on 24 August 2023, the day the set’s release was officially announced as a preview of this posthumous release.

• The New Power Generation Stores and 1-800 New Funk sold cufflinks in the shape of the word "insatiable" based on this song. Prince wore these in the photos used for the artwork for The Hits 1, The Hits 2 and The Hits / The B-Sides.
• On 26 September 2023, in promotion for the upcoming Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition, Prince social media channels shared documentation from the recording session for Insatiable, confirming the song's recording date. It's noteworthy that Prince labeled tracks 17 and 18 as "Ethereal Cream"; he would go on to record the song Cream almost two months later, and the final track on the Cream maxi-single is titled Ethereal Mix.
