Johnny is the fourteenth track (tenth song) on the New Power Generation’s first 'solo' album Gold Nigga (the thirteenth track and ninth song on later pressings of the CD). In 2004, a 2002 live version, known as NPG In This Funky House, mostly instrumental but with a clean version of the song’s chant, was released on the opening day of the NPG Music Club’s Musicology Download Store as part of the Bataclan download.

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in December 1991, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during a 10-hour session that also yielded 3 Chains O’ Gold and Love 2 The 9’s).

Of note is that this track is the earliest recording to feature Mr. Hayes in the studio as a band member (he previously played on unidentified remix(es) made for the Shake! maxi-single).
