Laydown is the uncredited 77th and final track on Prince's 35th album 20TEN (Everybody Loves Me, the album's ninth track, is the album's final credited track, with tracks 10-76 silent tracks). The title is written in lighter text on the back cover of the CD packaging.

Initial tracking dates are uncertain, but it is believed that the track was recorded in early 2010 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA.

The song's lyrics contain Prince referring to himself as "the purple Yoda", a reference to Star Wars character Yoda, believed to be the only reference to the popular movie franchise in Prince's lyrics (Sign O' The Times uses the phrase "Star Wars", but this likely refers to the US Strategic Defense Initiative nicknamed Star Wars).

Following Prince's performance of the song on Lopez Tonight, his performance was intercut with footage from the NBA Playoffs and included in a few different commercials for the playoffs which were broadcast during games in May and June 2011.

On 6 January 2013 a 5:54 extended mix of the song was streamed on 3rd Eye Girl YouTube channel.
