Live 4 Love is the 13th and final track on Prince’s 13th album Diamonds And Pearls, the first album to be credited to Prince and the New Power Generation.
In 1993, the track was included as the b-side of The Morning Papers, the fifth and final single from Prince’s 14th album .
In 2001, a 1992 live version was released as a video and audio download as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 10.
Basic tracking took place in the last week of December 1989, at Paisley Park Studios (during the same session as Diamonds And Pearls).
The track’s robotic countdown introduction comes from a sound library set by Sound Ideas and was first used in the unreleased 1988 track We Got The Power (Delirious, Lady Cab Driver, Something Funky (This House Comes) and the computer keystroke noises, computer confirmation beep, as well as the vault door sample heard throughout The Gold Experience are also from this series).
Live 4 Love was included as the tenth track on the December 1990, configuration of Diamonds And Pearls, but was moved to become the 13th and final track on the 1 March 1991 and 8 May 1991 configurations, where it remained for release.
The track features Michael B. (drums), who had just joined Prince’s band rehearsing for the Nude Tour, as well as Sonny T. (bass guitar), whom Prince had recruited to play for Flash, a backing band for Margie Cox. This is believed to be the earliest Prince-related recording to feature Tony M., who contributes a rap.
