Loveleft, Loveright is the sixth and final track on the maxi-single of New Power Generation, the second Prince single (and fourth single overall) from Prince’s twelfth album Graffiti Bridge (Round And Round by Tevin Campbell and Melody Cool by Mavis Staples had also been released). Although somewhat based around the track New Power Generation, it is considered a separate track and receives its own entry here. A brief sample was used in New Power Generation (Pt. II) as released on Graffiti Bridge.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place presumably in December 1989 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (based on the fact that part of the song can be heard in New Power Generation (Pt. II), as released on Graffiti Bridge). It was then further worked on in September or October 1990 at Larrabee Sound Studios in North Hollywood, California, during recording sessions for the New Power Generation maxi-single (during the same set of sessions as the N.P.G. (Funky Weapon Remix), T.C.’s Rap, Tony’s Iggnant Mix, Get Off, The Lubricated Lady, a segue later included in the N.P.G. (Funky Weapon Remix), Oobey Doop, Play, Heaven Is Keeping Score, and additional recording on My Tree and A Positive Place). It was included as the sixth track on both October 1990, configurations of the New Power Generation maxi-single (in a shorter version than released on the first configuration), which was worked on further before release.
