MPLS, by Minneapolis, is the first track on the album 1-800 New Funk (a compilation of mostly-unreleased music largely written and produced by Prince/, recorded by other Paisley Park Records artists), and, later in 1994, MPLS was available as a limited edition single, available from The New Power Generation Store and the phone service 1-800 New Funk only. A reprise of the song is also included as the album’s eleventh and final track. The song is credited to Sonny T. on the album but is registered at the ASCAP as having been written solely by Prince.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking took place in late 1989 - early 1990 with lead vocals by Jana Anderson (as "Jana Jade"). The track was worked on further in August 1992, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, with Sonny T. adding co-lead vocals. The Steeles are also heard in the song (crediting themselves: We’re the S-T-E-E-L-E-S). The track was intended for a planned project titled MPLS, but this project remained unfinished.
Confusingly, the track is mis-credited on the album as "Minneapolis" by "MPLS" - as clearly heard in the song’s lyrics, however, the band is named Minneapolis.
