Although specific recording dates are unknown, basic tracking took place in December 1990 or early 1991 at [[Paisley Park Studios]] in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as [[Spirit]], [[Don’t Say U Love Me]], [[Open Book]] and [[Go On (Witcha Bad Self)]]). In Spring 1991, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martika Martika] overdubbed her lead vocals and her musicians added overdubs to the track, in New York, NY, USA.

Martika’s Kitchen is the first track on Martika’s second album Martika’s Kitchen, and, around two months after the album’s release, Martika’s Kitchen was released as the album’s second single. In 1997, the single edit was included as the fifth track on the compilation album The Best Of Martika: More Than You Know. In 1998, the album version was included as the sixth track on the compilation album I Feel The Earth Move (released in Germany only). In 2005, the single edit was included as the fifth track on the compilation album Toy Soldiers: The Best Of Martika.

Tracking was on 11 January 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (on the same day as Open Book and Spirit). In the liner notes for the expanded 2018 re-release of Martika’s Kitchen [Reheated Edition], Martika discussed the song’s recording:"I remember sitting in Prince’s office for our first meeting. He said "Welcome to Paisley Park. I wrote this last night, knowing you were on your way" and handed me a sheet of paper with the handwritten lyrics of Martika’s Kitchen on it. The first thing I said was "Can I hear it?". He told me "It’s in my head". I was excited to have my very own, Prince-penned theme song, filled with sexy personality, and so much playfullness. I got a real kick out of the old-style, double entendre lyrics."

In February 1991, Prince reused the musical backing of Martika’s Kitchen for two entirely separate tracks, Work That Fat and Boom Box (see these songs entries for details). Prince’s version of Martika’s Kitchen was released in October 2023 as the second track of Vault Tracks part 2, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition.
