Murph Drag was included in NPG Ahdio Show # 3. The song is an edited down, (omitting a spoken part by Morris Day) of a version that was going to be featured on The Time's unreleased album Corporate World that was later released as Pandemonium without this song.
A segue on NPG Ahdio Show # 3 called the track "the first cybersingle" by The Time, but the track was not available as a separate download, and has not been released elsewhere. The track was written, produced, and largely performed by Prince, although no credits accompanied the release.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking is thought to have taken place in January 1989, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. In June or July 1989, Morris Day recorded co-lead vocal overdubs, also at Paisley Park Studios, as Prince and Day worked on The Time's Corporate World album (during the same sessions that produced The Latest Fashion, Nine Lives, Donald Trump (Black Version), Love Machine, Shake!, Corporate World and Release It). Candy Dulfer added saxophone overdubs to the track in late July 1989, also at Paisley Park Studios. The track was included as the first track on an early September 1989, configuration of Corporate World, but the track was removed when the album was re-worked to become Pandemonium. The recording heard on NPG Ahdio Show # 3 had not been re-worked in any way.
The track's title is also mentioned in the lyrics of The Latest Fashion.
