Musicology is the first track on Prince's 28th studio album Musicology, and, five weeks after the album's download release, Musicology was released as the album's first single in the UK, Germany and Australia.
Initial recording dates are unknown, but it is likely that the track was recorded in early 2003 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. In early May 2003, brief 2 second 'stabs' of each instrument, taken from the song, were playable at the NPG Music Club in a foyer by clicking on a picture of each instrument.
A contest was run for members to submit remixes using the samples, and starting 9 June 2003, members' remixes were added to the site (over the course of the Summer, 55 remixes were added in all). Since these have no input by Prince beyond the initial samples, they are not included in the listings below.
The album version of the track includes a segue at the end of the track involving a radio changing between stations (similar to a Segue on Carmen Electra's album Carmen Electra). Each station is playing a Prince song, and included are clips of If I Was Your Girlfriend, 17 Days, Kiss, Sign O' The Times and Little Red Corvette. Spoken over it are lyrics to Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance, the following track on the album.
