My Medallion was initially released as an mp3 download as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 8. The previous year, however, a pre-recorded humorous message, tentatively titled Thank U Just The Same, using the musical backing of My Medallion, was broadcast at the Yahoo! Internet Life Awards (as a response to winning the "Best Internet Only Single" award for One Song).

Earlier in 2001, My Medallion had also been included in NPG Ahdio Show # 1, but had not been available separately at the time.

While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking is believed to have taken place in Spring or early Summer 2000 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was tentatively included as the eighth track on the aborted High album, announced by NPGOnlineLtd.com to be complete (in rough form) on 8 August 2000, which was later aborted.

Whether intentionally or not, the song's music is largely based upon Eric Burdon and War's 1970 song Spill The Wine (written by War), but no writer's credits were given upon My Medallion's release.

Interestingly, My Medallion is one of only two tracks from High not to be included on the later releases, The Chocolate Invasion or The Slaughterhouse (the other being When Will We B Paid?), although the artwork for The Chocolate Invasion shows it listed as the album's fifth track, indicating it was included on a configuration of the album, but removed before release.

In 2015 when the The Chocolate Invasion album was featured on Tidal My Medallion appeared on the album as originally planned as its fifth track. The Tidal stream of the album omitted The Dance.

Although recorded while Prince was using the name SymbolSmallerBlue.png, the track was credited to Prince upon release, so it is credited as such here.
