My Summertime Thang is the 14th track (eleventh and final song) on The Time’s fourth album Pandemonium, and is written and produced by Prince (but credited to The Time). Prince also performs heavily on the song, but is uncredited.
Basic tracking took place at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California on 27 March 1983 (the day after Jungle Love, and the same day as Cloreen Bacon Skin), during a two-day break from the 1999 Tour). It seems logical the track would have been intended for The Time’s third album Ice Cream Castle, but is not known to have been included on any configurations of the album.
In July 1989, Prince gave the track (along with Pickle, You’re All I Want, U Should Be Mine, Wet Dream Cousin, Vibrator, The Max and XYZ) to Eric Leeds to consider reworking for a new Madhouse album (later called 26, which later evolved into Eric Leeds' solo album Times Squared). Eric Leeds did not choose this track to develop further, however.
Additional recording on The Time’s version took place between June and September 1989, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. One version contains lyrics from the Graffiti Bridge movie script, and Morris Day demonstrates his various dances (mostly named after other tracks by The Time: "the horse," "the oak tree," "Chili Sauce," "Murph Drag" and "The Bird." The track was later included as the tenth and final track on The Time’s proposed fourth album Corporate World, which later morphed into Pandemonium.
The music from the track was also reused on the version of The Latest Fashion which was included on the Graffiti Bridge album.
