Reason to name the album a Prince release was due to the time period in which most the tracks were recorded (save It’s About That Walk and Sarah). It contains is a compilation of unreleased tracks recorded from 1985 to 1996.

It was released worldwide in August, 1999 (eighteen months after Crystal Ball and three and a half years after the previous Warner Bros. release, the Girl 6 movie soundtrack).

The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale was submitted to Warner Bros. in 1996 (complete with artwork, and containing photography from Prince’s 1994 book Neo Manifesto) at the same time as Chaos And Disorder. Warner Bros chose to release it three years later, shortly before SymbolSmallerBlue.png’s new major label release on a competing label, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (due 3 months later).
