Initial tracking dates are unknown, but it is likely that the track was recorded in two parts in Summer 1996 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA; while the first part is a solo performance by Prince (as ), the second part of the track features Rhonda Smith and Kat Dyson, who joined 's band in June, 1996. The backing track features a loop of the ultrasound heartbeat of Prince and Mayte's unborn child (later named "Gregory"), and the Emancipation album notes state that the original title of the track (presumably with different lyrics) was Conception.
