1999 was originally the first single to be released from Prince’s fifth album 1999, but the release listed here is the late 1998 re-release to coincide with the calendar year 1999.

The single was released commercially only in the UK and Australia, while it was a promotional release in the USA and Germany.

Airplay on US radios in the last weeks of 1998 enabled the single to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at position 40 for one week on 16 January 1999, marking it’s third entry in the chart and reaching a total of 28 weeks since its release in 1982.

1999 also made its re-entry into the Billboard R&B Singles & Tracks Chart the same week at position 45.

Although this could be considered a basic re-release, it receives a separate entry here due to the timing of its release and its original artwork.
