1999 was originally the first single to be released from Prince's fifth album 1999, but the release listed here is a stand-alone single re-recorded and released to coincide with the calendar year 1999 (on the same day as Graham Central Station's album GCS 2000).

Although Prince was using the name SymbolSmallerBlue.png at the time, the tracks and single were credited to Prince and the Revolution, although the original track and single were recorded and credited only to Prince, and no original Revolution members appear on this re-recording (instead, Rosie Gaines, Larry Graham and Doug E. Fresh appear).

The single was released independently by NPG Records within six weeks of Warner Bros.' re-release of the original 1999 single, but there was no video accompanying the single and without much marketing, the single did not sell well, reaching only number 150 in the US Billboard Pop Chart, and number 58 on the Billboard R&B Chart.

Love4OneAnother.com stated at the time that every track released by Warner Bros. had been re-recorded as a "new master" by Prince (specifically as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) (to, in essence, regain control over the songs), and that this was the first taste of these recordings. No other "new masters" have been made publicly available, however.

  • The arrival of the calendar year 1999 meant that the original version of 1999 was played heavily on radio and TV, and the lyrics were referred to regularly throughout the media world.
  • Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) hosted two launch parties in Las Vegas, NV, USA, to celebrate the single's release. The first, on 1 January, 1999, featured a live set by The Time at which Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) guested on guitar and keyboards for two songs. The second, on 2 January, 1999, featured a full live set by Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png), also featuring Rosie Gaines, Larry Graham and Doug E. Fresh, who appear on the single.
