Controversy was the fourth single from Prince's first compilation albums The Hits 1 and The Hits 2, taken specifically from The Hits 2 (also included as the second disc of The Hits / The B-Sides.

It was released three months after the album in the UK only (where it was the second single), and was not released elsewhere. Continuing the idea started on the UK version of the Peach single, many of the single's b-sides are the single versions of minor hits which were not included on The Hits 1 or The Hits 2, so the two-disc single could be considered a companion to those albums.

Of note is that New Power Generation Pt. II is included, marking the only release to contain one part of the song without the other (both Graffiti Bridge and the New Power Generation single contain both parts).

The single contains different artwork and completely different tracks (other than Controversy itself) than the 1981 Controversy single, which is why it receives a separate listing here. The cover art and some of the b-sides closely match the Pink Cashmere single, which was not released in the UK, but was released elsewhere in Europe at around the same time.

The single reached number 5 on the UK Gallup Singles Chart.
