For the first time on record, the single cover used digitally is exactly the same as the cover used for some versions of the [[Album: Originals|Originals]], even including the text "Originals" without using the single title. This is odd given that the video released on the same day has a unique visual style, and the album's official YouTube streams used different photos from the same session as the album cover for each track.

Holly Rock (Edit) was the second official single from the posthumous Prince album Originals (although the first single, Nothing Compares 2 U, was released prior to the album’s conception), and was released six weeks after the album’s Tidal release (four weeks after its wider retail release). As indicated by the title, the single contained an edit of Prince’s original 1985 studio version of Holly Rock, a song he wrote for Sheila E. for the movie soundtrack Krush Groove, the soundtrack album to the movie Krush Groove in which Sheila E. starred. Her own version was released in a similar edit on the 1986 single Holly Rock.

A digital single was released on 25 July 2019. An accompanying animated video was made available at the same time on the official Prince YouTube channel.

For the first time on record, the single cover used digitally is exactly the same as the cover used for some versions of the Originals, even including the text "Originals" without using the single title. This is odd given that the video released on the same day has a unique visual style, and the album’s official YouTube streams used different photos from the same session as the album cover for each track.
