Sixteen is the eighth and final track on Madhouse’s second and final album 16. Sixteen was written and produced by Prince and Eric Leeds (credited only to Madhouse).

While specific recording dates are not known, it was likely recorded in March 1987 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, around the same time as Nine. The rest of the album was recorded in late July and early August 1987 so the title was only assigned after the final sequence had been arranged for the album. Sixteen was included in the unreleased short film Hard Life shot in late March 1987 and performed on the Sign O’ The Times Tour on which Madhouse was the opening act.

The track opens and closes with sampled lines of dialogue by John Marley as Jack Woltz from the 1972 movie The Godfather (a movie also sampled on Eleven and Thirteen).
