The Ride is the sixth track on the third disc of Prince's 20th album Crystal Ball (his fourth using the name SymbolSmallerBlue.png). The released version is a live version recorded on 29 October 1995 (a.m.) at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Three years previously, however, a 1993 rehearsal take of the song had been included as the first track on The Undertaker home video and, released the same day, a 1993 live version was included as the first track on The Sacrifice Of Victor home video (in 2002, this same video version was released as a video download as part of the NPG Music Club Edition # 5). In 1996, the same 1995 live version later included on Crystal Ball was included on the Love 4 One Another TV-special. In 2003, a 2002 live version was included as a bonus track on the Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas DVD.

The rehearsal version included on the The Undertaker album (which was ultimately abandoned, but released on home video) was recorded on 14 June 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with versions of Poorgoo, Honky Tonk Women, Bambi, Zannalee, The Undertaker and Dolphin, the day before recording Calhoun Square), but no other studio version by Prince is known to exist.
