The Walk is the fourth track on The Time's second album What Time Is It?, and, three months after the album's release, The Walk was released as the album's second single.
The song was written by Prince, although the song is officially credited to The Time (as is most of the rest of the album). It was produced by Prince (as The Starr Company), but was credited to Morris Day and The Starr Company.
Initial tracking took place on 14 January 1982 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (three days after Bold Generation and Gigolos Get Lonely Too, the same day as International Lover, and the day before Colleen).
As with most of the rest of the album, the track features only Morris Day and Prince as musicians. The song's spoken section introduces the idea of Morris Day referring to a woman as "Grace" regardless of her real name; an idea also used on Grace. It also refers to the chorus of The Stick.
