Turn Me Loose was premiered in a live performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, on 25 April 2008. It was assumed at the time that a studio version would be included on Prince’s next album, and a studio version was played on KJLH internet radio on 24 September 2008, but the plans were canceled for unknown reasons.
It is thought the track was first cut in the spring of 2008, but it was also worked on 1 September 2008 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. Blogger DrFunkenberry stated in 2018 that the track had been intended for MPLSound, but that Bria Valente had objected to the song’s lyrical content, and Prince decided against its inclusion. The song was included as the sixth track on a (late Summer 2008) configuration of Lotusflow3r but was removed before the album’s release. There is also some evidence that the song was intended for an unreleased 2008 album which would also include F.U.N.K., although this has not been confirmed.
