Cool is the first video by The Time released for broadcast and to promote their second single (Get It Up, their first single, did not receive a video treatment). Cool features all the original members of the band, including Jerome Benton who has been recruited after the release of their first album.
The video was directed by Chuck Statler and shot on a single day presumably in late Summer / early Fall 1981 in a public school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince was present during the 12-hour shooting but does not appear in the video. It begins with the members of the band interrupting a class and kicking the teacher out of the classroom. They then perform the song in front of the 25 students, complete with the “C-O-O-L” 'hands-spelling'.
The third single from the album, Girl, did not receive a video treatment.
After this video, Chuck Statler was hired by Prince to shoot the concert he gave on 7 March 1982 at the Met Center, Bloomington, MN, USA (Controversy Tour) and additional scenes in his home for a film titled The Second Coming. This project remains unreleased.
On 25 June 2021, Cool was uploaded on Rhino’s official Youtube channel to promote the reissue of The Time’s first album.
