NYC is a cassette single sold for $20.00 directly from the 1-800 New Funk phone service, and can be considered the third and final commercially-released single from Emancipation (although Face Down had been available promotionally following the album's second single The Holy River, and The Holy River itself was released promotionally in the USA in the Summer of 1997). The artwork is clearly intended to look like an unauthorized bootleg recording, even containing the handwritten phrase: "4th Generation Bootleg, but it's All Good!!" This release contained live versions of Jam Of The Year and Face Down, and is notable for being the first time Prince had ever released (on audio) live versions of previously-released tracks. Both tracks were recorded live on 11 January 1997 at the Roseland, New York, NY, USA. Although played at different points during the concert, they have been mixed to fade the audience noise into each other, as in a live context. The tracks repeat on the cassette's b-side.
