The track originally appeared in the 1977 comedy movie Which Way Is Up?, starring Richard Pryor (dialogue scenes from the film were sampled or borrowed on Daddy Pop and Return Of The Bump Squad). (Theme Song From) Which Way Is Up? was released as a single the following year and appearing on Stargard’s debut album Stargard (1978).
The track was written by Norman Whitfield. The version streamed was a live version from 30 June 2013 (a.m.) City Winery Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA, with lead vocals by Shelby J., who had sung the track live regularly since joining Prince’s band in late 2006. A live version of the song (from the show given on 28 April 2011 at The Forum, Inglewood, California, USA) was included on the Blu-ray of the deluxe edition of the posthumous Welcome 2 America album released in 2021.
