3rdEyeGirl (usually stylized as 3RDEYEGIRL) is an all-girl band / power trio assembled by Prince between November and December 2012.

The bandname first appeared on 31 December 2012 with the streaming of a 3:22 studio rehearsal video of Bambi on YouTube by an entity called "3rdEyeGirl" and describing itself as International art thief.

Prince first denied being linked with 3rdEyeGirl, but it soon appeared that the entity was under his control as a Twitter account streaming official Prince material was launched in the first days of January 2013, shortly followed by a website, 3rdEyeGirl.com, selling official material (linked with a paypal account belonging to NPG Records Inc.).

Prince recruited Hannah Ford in September 2012 as a guest drummer for the "Welcome 2 Chicago" three show-residency, after seeing videos of her performing on line. Soon after she appeared as lead drummer of The NPG for Prince's performance of Rock And Roll Love Affair on Jimmy Kimmel Live! show on 23 October 2012 as well as in the video for that song.

Asked by Prince to look for a female guitarist, Ford together with her husband Joshua Welton scouted on line and found Donna Grantis via her videos on Youtube in late November. She was auditioned one week later at Paisley Park Studios and subsequently recruited in December 2012. Bassist Ida Nielsen had been performing with The NPG since October 2010, and the only member of the trio to have previous experience playing for Prince as bassist of The NPG.

Shortly after Grantis came on board, the band started rehearsals for the Live Out Loud Tour and started to recorded new material with Prince at Paisley Park Studios. A 3rdEyeGirl featuring Prince album release, Plectrumelectrum, was announced to be released in 'early 2014', but did not come out until late September of that year.

At times 3rdEyeGirl acted as a replacement for The NPG, backing up Prince at shows (albeit always billed as Prince with 3rdEyeGirl). but Prince also continued to play live shows and to release music with The NPG, on most occasions with Ford on drums, Grantis on guitar and Ida Nielsen, alternating on (extra) guitar and bass, depending if there is another bass player, since 2014 usually Andrew Gouché.

Screwdriver
Screwdriver is a stand-alone released on swiss label Purple Music on 4 February 2013.

The first public mention of the song was on 17 December 2012, when a 0:30 video rehearsal clip of the song was streamed on drummer Hannah Ford's Facebook page with the message: A Taste of Rehearsal. The video included new guitarist Donna Grantis, and ended with a text screen stating:
"2 C the rest of Donna's audition holla at ya girl! We've got bootlegs 4 daazzzzzze every good thing in the vault... Coming 2013".

On 22 January 2013, a music "lyrics" video of the song, featuring 3rdEyeGirl was streamed on 20pr1nc3.com website. A month later, on 10 February 2013 a short film containing new footage for Screwdriver and featuring the 3rdEyeGirl band was released on 3rdEyeGirl.com.

Live Out Loud
Live Out Loud was first available for download from 3rdEyeGirl.com website on 22 February 2013. The track's lead vocals are performed by Hannah Ford, Donna Grantis and Ida Nielsen. The song's lyrics were written by Liv Warfield and the music was written by Prince, who also appears on background vocals. Eight days later Live Out Loud music video was released on 3rdEyeGirl.com.

Bambi rehearsal
On 25 February 2013 a live rehearsal video of Bambi featuring 3rdEyeGirl was released on 3rdEyeGirl.com. It had previously been streamed on 3rdEyeGirl YouTube account.

Plectrum Electrum
Plectrum Electrum is an instrumental composed by Donna Grantis, published on her own band "Donna Grantis Electric Band" 2012 album "Suites", under the name "Elektra (Elektra Suite)". The title was streamed as a video billed Plectrumelectrum: an extremely short film by Madison Dubé, on the Vimeo account of photographer Madison Dube, and linked on the 3rd Eye Girl social media channels on 13 March 2013.

It is not certain if the performance, recorded early 2013 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, was intended to be a stand-alone film or part of a future album project. Although "3rdEyeGirl" was captioned as an artist credit, Prince was shown as the lead guitarist and bandleader.

A 3rdEyeGirl featuring Prince album, Plectrumelectrum, has also been announced to be in the making and is expected to be released in 2014.

Fixurlifeup
Broadcast on Toronto (Canada) radio station CBC Radio's show Q with Jian Ghomeshi on 12 April 2013, Fixurlifeup was premiered as new Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL song. It is assumed to have been recorded in early 2013 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA.

Released digitally on iTunes worldwide on 16 May 2013, Fixurlifeup was the first single by 3rdEyeGirl to be released on NPG Records; planned as the first single from their album Plectrumelectrum, originally announced for release on Kobalt Music, it was eventually released on 30 September 2014 on Warner Bros.

Pretzelbodylogic
On 28 January 2014, a 28-second audio clip was streamed on the 3rdEyeGirl YouTube account. The track was announced by Hannah Ford on her Facebook account as the first single from the PlectrumElectrum album, coming in 2014. It is likely that the track was recorded in 2013 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, MN, USA.

It was released as a digital single on 3 February 2014.

PlectrumElectrum
On 30 September 2014, PlectrumElectrum album was released in the USA (29 September 2014 in Europe).

It was made available for pre-order on iTunes USA, Amazon and on a dedicated Warner Bros Records website on 25 August 2014. Available formats are CD + Digital MP3 bundle, MP3 and WAV. On 29 September 2014 the album was made available on Spotify streaming platform.

Live

The band rehearsed together from December 2012, and were reported as having over 100 songs in their catalog. 3rdEyeGirl backed Prince on the Live Out Loud Tour and for his performance at 2013 Billboard Awards on 19 May 2013 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas (NV) USA. They were incorporated into The NPG band from July 2013 onwards, although they still occasionally appeared as Prince's sole backing band.
