1-800 New Funk is a compilation of music largely written and produced by Prince/SymbolSmallerBlue.png, recorded by other Paisley Park Records / NPG Records artists.

Some had been released previously, but most tracks were previously-unreleased and did not subsequently appear on any other releases, although the booklet showed images that could have been intended as album covers for each artist.

Other than George Clinton’s contribution Hollywood, all songs contained either writing or other musical input from Prince, and the album included a new track by Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png), Love Sign, which was credited as a duet by "Nona Gaye and SymbolSmallerBlue.png", with Nona Gaye credited as the main artist due to the disputes Prince was having with Warner Bros. about releasing his music independently.

Promotion

The album produced two singles: Love Sign (available only as a promotional single) and Standing At The Altar (the only commercially-available single from the album).

2gether had previously been available, but tied in with the New Power Generation album Gold Nigga.

MPLS and If EyeBlue.png ♥ U 2night received a limited release earlier in 1994 as stand-alone singles but were not connected to this compilation at the time of release (no forthcoming album was listed on the singles artworks). If EyeBlue.png ♥ U 2night was also re-released as a single in October 1995, in conjunction with Mayte’s album Child Of The Sun.

Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) supported the album with a video and TV performance of Love Sign, and the album was advertised with a full-page advertisement in Billboard magazine, mimicking the advertisement put out the previous month by Warner Bros. advertising Come (which was released three days after 1-800 New Funk).

The album failed to enter the US Billboard 200 chart, but reached number 45 on the Billboard R&B Chart.

Additional Information

Promotion (at time of release) Trivia

  • The album was made available on 12 July 1994, a month before its official release, at Tower Records, New York, NY, USA for a signing session.
  • SymbolSmallerBlue.png took out advertisements in music periodicals mimicking those that Warner Bros. was putting out for the Come album released three days later. The intention was to market this as SymbolSmallerBlue.png’s "new" music, as opposed to Prince’s "old" music.
Bellmark records advert published in Billboards
  • 1-800 New Funk was named after SymbolSmallerBlue.png’s phone service 1-800 New Funk, which offered music and other products related to SymbolSmallerBlue.png.
