Van Gogh is the fourth studio album by Atlanta-based group Van Gogh, and was released in November 1998 as a mail order / internet release only. The album contained Van Gogh, written by Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png), Sandra St. Victor and Tom Hammer (both uncredited).

Sessions and compiling

While specific recording dates are not known, the track was originally written by Sandra St. Victor as Love Is, and was sent to Prince in Summer 1995, following a loose agreement for Prince and Sandra St. Victor to work together. Additional lyrics and music were added by Prince (as SymbolSmallerBlue.png) before recording in 1995.

In March 1998, Prince sent a cassette of the song to Van Gogh, as he wanted to give a song to a professional artist with a disability and had found Van Gogh after much searching online, through the Coalition of Disabled Musicians in New York (the bandmembers all use wheelchairs). Van Gogh’s version was recorded in Spring or Summer 1998 at Van Gogh Studios, Atlanta, GA, USA.

Promotion

The album did not enter the charts.

Prince’s own version of Van Gogh was released in July 2001, as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 6.
