Angel is a song written and originally performed by Sarah McLachlan, which first appeared on her 1997 album Surfacing.
The song has been performed often in Prince's live shows from 2008-2011, with lead vocals by Shelby J. (usually shared with Elisa Dease and Liv Warfield to a lesser degree).
A live video version of the song, recorded on the second date of the Welcome 2 Canada Tour, on 26 November 2011, on bandmember Andy Allo's Facebook page within hours of its performance (Allo, however, does not appear musically on the video, only appearing to fan cool air onto Liv Warfield's face at the end of the song). No studio version by Prince is believed to exist.
The video was initially available as a clip only, before a full version replaced it the following day.
Sarah McLachlan has stated that the song was written about the death of Jonathan Melvoin by heroin overdose; Jonathan Melvoin was Wendy Melvoin's brother, and appeared on Around The World In A Day, Pop Life, Do U Lie? and possibly also on America; Prince wrote The Love We Make about his death also.
