Baby, You’re A Trip is the eighth and final track on Jill Jones’s first and only Paisley Park Records album Jill Jones (a brief portion of the song, in a different recording, is also included as an introduction to the album’s first track, Mia Bocca). It was included as the b-side of For Love, the album’s third and final single. Although Jill Jones was given official writing credits, the song was written solely by Prince.
A 2019 review of Prince’s version on the posthumously-released album Originals states that Prince wrote the song for Jill Jones "about the time she snooped in his diary after he read hers."
Basic tracking for Prince’s original version took place on 8 July 1982 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
While David Z. and Jill Jones are listed as producers of the song, the only musicians known to have contributed to the track beyond Prince and Jill Jones is Clare Fischer’s orchestra, commissioned by Prince.
In 2019, Prince’s own version (after orchestral overdubs) was released as the ninth track on the posthumous album Originals.
