Balloon is the first track on Heroine December's first and only EP Target Practice. The song was released as the first single on 14 February 2014, six weeks before the EP release with no songwriting credits.

Prince’s involvement on Balloon wasn’t known until 2021 when Maya McClean revealed in an interview that he help them rewrite the song she wrote (most likely with her sister Nandy : "He re-wrote one of the songs that me and my sister released called Balloon. We’ll play it somewhere and then he goes « Maybe you can do a little bit of a change here and a little bit there ». So then when we recorded it, we have used his chords in some of the transitional parts".

Balloon features Sheila E. on congas. It is safe to assume that the song was recorded between 2011 and september 2012 her before falling out with Prince.
