Bambi is the sixth track on Prince’s second album Prince, and, eleven months after the album’s release, Bambi was released as the album’s fifth worldwide single, only available in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Earlier in 1980, the track was released as as the b-side of some versions of Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, the album’s second single (released in the USA and New Zealand).

Two months later it was included as the b-side of Still Waiting, the album’s third single (released in the USA and New Zealand). The following month it was released as the b-side of Sexy Dancer, the album’s fourth single, only on the UK release.

In 1991, a re-recorded rap version (titled Bambi (Rap)) by T.C. Ellis was included as the eleventh track on T.C. Ellis' first and only album True Confessions. Although the track was authorized by Prince, the track had no input by him and is considered a cover version.

While specific recording dates are not known, the album sessions took place from late April to late May 1979 at Alpha Studios, Burbank, CA, USA. Overdubs and mixing took place at Hollywood Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, California.

Bambi was re-recorded on 14 June 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with versions of The Ride, Poorgoo, Honky Tonk-Woman, Zannalee, The Undertaker and Dolphin, the day before recording Calhoun Square), as part of the session for the aborted The Undertaker album released on film in 1995 as The Undertaker.

  • The live versions of Bambi played by Prince in concert between 1990 - 2001 and 2005 - 2014 regularly contained a part from the song "Grip It" by the go-go band Trouble Funk, released only in live version on their 1983 Saturday Night Live album. This same part was sampled as the intro of Fight The Power by Public Enemy, which was included on Spike Lee’s film Do The Right Thing, its soundtrack, as a single (all released in 1989) and on Public Enemy’s album Fear Of A Black Planet released in April 1990. Prince also covered this song in 1999 and played it live a few times between 1999 and 2002. Fight The Power also appears in The WNPG Origin Playlist (xcerpt) (see the trivia section of the WNPG Radio page). It is unclear if Prince included this part in reference to the Trouble Funk song or in reference to Fight The Power which was popular at the time and has been seen as an anthem since the summer of 1989. Because of this uncertainty, this interpolation of the Trouble Funk song and/or its sample by Public Enemy as a part of their song is therefore not mentioned as interpolation on the pages of the concerned shows between 1990 and 2014.
