Go Go Dancer is the first track on Carmen Electra’s only album Carmen Electra, and, eight months prior to the album’s release, Go Go Dancer was released as the album’s first single, containing several remixes of the track, while Carmen Electra was serving as the opening act on the Diamonds And Pearls Tour. In 1993, the Radio Edit was also included on the maxi-single of Everybody Get On Up, the album’s second single. The track was written by Prince, Carmen Electra and Tony Mosley, and produced by Prince (although no producer credit was given, other than Paisley Park as executive producer).

Basic tracking took place on 8 November 1991 at Record Plant, Los Angeles, Califormia (the same day as Race). The track contains a sample of Lost In Music by Sister Sledge (from their 1979 album We Are Family, also released as a single), although the Go Go Dancer single incorrectly attributes the track to Chic. Monie Love’s background vocals may have been recorded in January 1992, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, during the same set of sessions as Love’s Born 2 B.R.E.E.D. and In A Word Or 2, but it is also possible that she was present at the basic tracking session, which would mark the earliest known recording by Monie Love on a Prince-related recording.
