God was released as the b-side of Purple Rain, the third single from Prince's seventh album Purple Rain. The UK 12" release of the single contained God (Love Theme From Purple Rain), a 7:54 instrumental version heard in the movie Purple Rain, but other worldwide releases contained a completely re-recorded vocal version, simply titled God.
In 1993, the vocal version was included as the 18th track on The B-Sides compilation (included as the third and final disc on The Hits / The B-Sides).
Initial tracking for God (Love Theme From Purple Rain) took place on 7 February 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (six days before Noon Rendezvous).
It is not known if this was a solo recording, although this is likely. The vocal version, God, was recorded on 20 August 1984, at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA. Prince recorded the track on his own.
