Good Love was the first track on the Bright Lights, Big City soundtrack album, released to coincide with the Bright Lights, Big City movie. This marked the first time that Prince had contributed a previously-unreleased song to a movie soundtrack. In 1998, a different edit of the song (editing out some parts, but including a longer ending), was included as the ninth track on the second disc of Prince's 20th album Crystal Ball (his fourth using the name SymbolSmallerBlue.png). The album is not clearly divided between Prince tracks and SymbolSmallerBlue.png tracks, but the liner notes' discussion of this track refer to "Prince" making this track, which is consistent with the original release.

Basic tracks for the studio version were recorded on 30 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (two days after Rebirth Of The Flesh and Rockhard In A Funky Place, three days before If I Was Your Girlfriend). The track was included as the sixth track on the 5 November 1986 configuration of the Camille album (credited to the pseudonym Camille), which was later aborted. A few weeks later, it was included as the second track on the third disc as the album developed into the triple-album Crystal Ball on the 30 November 1986 configuration. On both albums, the track followed directly after Shockadelica. Both tracks were removed when the album was eventually pared down and became Sign O' The Times.
